Election of Patriarch in Istanbul’s Armenian Patriarchate to be historic event - Gochunyan

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 27, ARMENPRESS. The decision of declaring the Patriarchal seat of the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul as “vacant” and launching the process of electing a new Patriarch was a historic decision, Ara Gochunyan – editor in chief of Istanbul’s “Agos” told ARMENPRESS.

“We were informed by our source from the Patriarchate, that the decision was made with the consent of Archbishop Aram Ateshyan and Chairman of the Church assembly Bishop Sahak Mashalyan. The two high ranking clergymen decided to push the cart forward. Their cooperation and harmonious approaches were basis for the decision”, Gochunyan said.

He reminded that the Patriarchal seat of Istanbul’s Armenian Patriarchate is practically vacant for 8 years.

According to Church rules, 7 years of absence of the Patriarch is enough to dissolve the covenant.

“Based on the facts a decision was made to hold Patriarchal elections. The new, 85th Patriarch must be elected. The approval of the Interior Ministry of Turkey is needed for the elections to take place”, Gochunyan said.

Gochunyan says the list of possible candidates will be known gradually, however circulating names include Ateshyan and Mashalyan, Garegin Archbishop Bekchyan, leader of Germany’s diocese. Khajak Archbishop Parsamyan and Vigen Archbishop Aykazyan are also among possible candidates.
