Talks on comprehensive air transport agreement with EU will launch in near future

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 7, ARMENPRESS. The comprehensive air transport agreement between the European Commission and Armenia proposes to form simultaneously liberalized regime in the aviation sector with 28 member states, First Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Investments Garegin Melkonyan told reporters on December 7, reports “Armenpress”.

He expressed his satisfaction over the adoption of the decision, according to which the European Commission has received a respective negotiation mandate, and the launch of talks on Armenia-EU Common Aviation Area Agreement became possible. The Deputy Minister said the talks will start in near future when the two sides will be ready both professionally and technically. He said the talks over the agreement will not last long since it is a model agreement, and the parts that are subject to changes are much less.

He said the sides will mutually receive the so-called “fifth freedom”, when the airline companies signed by the two states no more need to clarify the frequency of flights, their destinations, cities and etc. with the aviation authorities.

“This will enable the airlines of the EU member states to transport passengers to Armenia from another state. In terms of competitiveness, it can create quite a liberalized field, which can contribute to improving the general environment, and of course on the decrease in prices and regulation of more favorable passenger transportation”, Melkonyan said, adding that the process on signing liberalized agreements with a number of EU member states already exists.
