3 MPs hospitalized as Turkey’s female lawmakers engage in violent brawl

YEREVAN, JANUARY 20, ARMENPRESS. Turkish female lawmakers brawled in the country’s Parliament during debates on constitutional changes, Hurriyet reported.

Independent lawmaker Aylin Nazlıaka handcuffed herself to the microphone of the lectern, and refused to leave after numerous urges. Gökçen Özdoğan Enç, a lawmaker from the country’s ruling party, approached Nazliaka and tried to forcibly remove the handcuffs, which resulted in a violent altercation between female lawmakers from the ruling party and the pro-Kurdish HDP party.

Some of the women were seriously injured, including Pervin Buldan, the deputy speaker of the parliament. According to Hurriyet, three lawmakers were hospitalized.

Shafak Pavey’s prosthetic fell off and was damaged during the brawl.

The Parliament resumed the debates after a three hour halt.
