YEREVAN, JANUARY 20, ARMENPRESS. The overcrowding problem in Armenia’s correctional facilities has been solved, Hayk Kochinyan, head of the international cooperation and analytical department of the Department of Corrections of the justice ministry told reporters on January 20.

“Various works have been done in two years for solving the problem”, Kochinyan said, adding that several prisons have been re-organized, and expanded.

“In addition, numerous construction works have been done in correctional facilities. It is due to such large-scale work that today we don’t have the prison overcrowding problem”, he said.

According to him, 5400 prisoners are allowed to be housed in 12 correctional facilities, and currently around 3900 are incarcerated in those facilities.
