Ateshian doesn’t see appropriate conditions for leaving post of Patriarchal Vicar

YEREVAN, MARCH 23, ARMENPRESS. Archbishop Aram Ateshian says there are still no conditions for him to leave the post of Armenian Patriarchal Vicar of Istanbul, he told “Agos”.

“The post of patriarch is not anyone’s personal property or heritage. Thus, it is necessary to examine the issues from the other side”, he said, adding that as a Patriarchal Vicar he has worked on “sensitive grounds that were formed in 2010”. “Here there is no resistance or persistence by me. When conditions are mature, the process will develop in itself”, Ateshian said.

Commenting on elected locum tenens Archbishop Garegin Bekchian’s call not to use the post of Vicar in official writing, Ateshian said Bekchian is an experienced clergyman, but “the populist appeals made from Cologne will not contribute to overcoming the current deadlock”. “I think the problems can be settled with the spirit of piety, rather than by displaying force, proving power”, he said.

He also commented on the request letter submitted to the Istanbul Governor’s Office on organizing a meeting, stating that there is no response yet. “We continue waiting for it. I think in this process we can establish contacts with the leadership circles in a healthy atmosphere. We are not opposite sides. The Patriarchate is a structure of Turkey, and the state trusts it”, he said.
