Armenian MP presents at PACE Azerbaijan’s steps on abusing Interpol’s reputation

YEREVAN, APRIL 27, ARMENPRESS. Member of Armenian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Naira Karapetyan delivered speech at the PACE spring sitting by criticizing Azerbaijan’s actions on abusing Interpol’s name and reputation, reports Armenpress.

In her speech Naira Karapetyan said any topic related to human rights and fundamental freedoms is strictly important and they must be kept under the spotlight. “We must highlight the role of Interpol as an effective tool for inter-state and inter-national cooperation in fight against crimes. However, there is one important question which should be clearly defined: no country has a right to abuse Interpol’s reputation and name for fulfilling its own goals, mainly for political reasons. Some member states of the Council of Europe tried to violate the Article 3 of Interpol’s rules of procedure which bans Interpol’s interference in political, religious or racism related affairs”, she said.

Karapetyan stated that CoE member state Azerbaijan uses Interpol for such cases, and presented several examples. “For instance, recently Azerbaijan applied to Belarus for arresting blogger Alexander Lapshin. Lapshin is accused of criticizing the Azerbaijani leadership and visiting Nagorno Karabakh [Artsakh Republic], a Republic which legally declared its independence half a century ago. While Interpol, as later was revealed, denied Azerbaijan’s application over Lapshin, the Russian-Israeli blogger was arrested and extradited from Belarus to Azerbaijan”, the MP said, adding that this is a vivid example of abusing Interpol’s name and reputation.

“I really want to believe that our joint efforts will give their results, and an important organization like Interpol will no longer be used by certain countries as a political platform”, Naira Karapetyan said.
