Rate of melanoma prevalence grows in Armenia

YEREVAN, MAY 23, ARMENPRESS. A growth of the melanoma disease has been recorded in Armenia. 361 cases were diagnosed in 2005, 400 in 2010, while in 2016 the number was 502, Michael Sahakyan, director of the healthcare ministry’s dermatology and STI medical-research center told a press conference. Sahakyan said these numbers are quite concerning.

“Melanoma, is a type of cancer that develops from the pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes. These cells, in addition to skin, can be located in the mucous membrane, the oral cavity, urinary tract, especially in the uterus, small intestine, eye retina and pupil. This is a very unpleasant and serious disease, often without any clinical symptoms. In early stages of diagnosis, fortunately it can be treated by 95-98%”, Sahakyan said.

In terms of global statistics, he said according to the WHO, 200 thousand people are diagnosed with melanoma yearly across the world, while mortality cases reach 65 thousand, i.e. 32%.

“The very first risk factor for causing melanoma are ultraviolet rays. People having lighter skin color, hair and eyes are found to be under risk from this perspective, and people above the age of 50 are more vulnerable. By the way, solariums increase the threat of melanoma by 70%”, he said.

Speaking on the recent diagnosis event of the medical-research center on May 20, Sahakyan said only 18 people had come to have the check-up.

“Perhaps it was due to unawareness of the event or simply indifference, that such a small number of people came”, he said, adding that modern diagnosis test was performed for those who came for the event, and in one case the danger of melanoma was discovered in one patient, who was advised to seek consultation in the Oncology Institute.

Medical professionals recommend to stay away from direct sunlight ahead of summer, use sun protection lotions while on vacations, and swim in the sea until 10:00 in the morning or after 16:00.
