Current situation in Artsakh is a violation of children’s fundamental rights, including right to
education

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 16, ARMENPRESS. Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport is in constant touch with the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Artsakh over the current situation in Artsakh, the ministry said.

Minister Zhanna Andreasyan and acting minister of education of Artsakh Hasmik Minasyan discussed the issue of ensuring the education of children of Artsakh. Currently, around 22,000 children in Artsakh are deprived of the right to education due to the absence of heating as Azerbaijan cut off the gas supply to Artsakh on December 13 and restored it only today. Around 300 children of Artsakh are in Armenia and are unable to return home because of Azerbaijan’s blockade of the Lachin Corridor.

In order to ensure the continuation of education of the children who are now in Armenia, works are underway with the Office of the Governor of Syunik to temporarily organize their studies in the local schools.

“The current situation is a humanitarian crisis and a violation of the fundamental rights of children, including the right to education.

Respective letters presenting the situation have been sent to the UNICEF Executive Director and UNESCO chief”, the ministry said.
