Modi’s alliance wins majority in early India vote count

YEREVAN, JUNE 4, ARMENPRESS. Early results from world’s largest election indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has won a majority in the 543-seat lower house of India’s bicameral Parliament, the Lok Sabha.

According to NDTV, initial results show that BPJ has won 298 seats and the coalition of 28 opposition parties - I.N.D.I.A. (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) has won 225 seats.

A party or alliance that wins more than 272 seats in the 543-member parliament can form the government.

Thus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is eyeing a rare third consecutive term for himself and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The world's largest election was held in seven phases over six weeks with almost a billion people registered to vote.
