US foreign policy course will not change by election of new president - political scientist

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 8, ARMENPRESS. In connection with the election of the new US President, the country’s foreign policy course will not undergo major changes, political scientist Sergey Minasyan told “Armenpress”.

“There will not be changes especially in the foreign policy issues if Hillary Clinton is elected as President, who is a Democratic Party representative, and now there are many talks about her possibility to be elected. The approaches that exist in the US foreign policy procedures under Obama, will be mainly maintained”, he said.

To the question what changes can happen in the ongoing developments in Russia and the Middle-Eastern countries, Sergey Minasyan said the US common line will be maintained on these issues, but Mrs. Clinton’s administration will try to adopt a more active, tougher stance on Russia and the Middle East.

“Of course, that tougher stance is being announced, but let’s state that it is still an intention. Let’s remember Obama when he came to power, he was trying to run another policy, to withdraw the US troops from Afghanistan, Iraq and reduce the US involvement in those affairs, but we saw that the political reality was different. During Obama administration the US was more involved in the Middle East crisis”, he said.

As for the candidates’ stance on the Armenian issues, Sergey Minasyan said the majority of the Armenian community supports the Democratic Party representatives.

“The community is not so satisfied with both candidates, but, in general, it supports the Democrats. As for the relations with Armenia, the general line will continue, but taking into account the fact that Clinton is the person who personally participated in the Armenian-Turkish diplomatic process, I think the attention will be a little more”, Sergey Minasyan said.
