I am happy that I could invent my skill in gymnastics - Houry Gebeshian

YEREVAN, JANUARY 9, ARMENPRESS. Women’s gymnastics school of Armenia starts from a new page the way to Tokyo Olympic Games.

Last year participant of the 31st Summer Olympic Games Houry Gebeshian laid the cornerstone of the women’s gymnastics. She is a descendent of the Armenian Genocide survivors. She was born in 1989 in city of Cambrigde, Massachusetts.

In an interview with “Armenpress”, Houry shared her impressions from the Olympic Games and talked about her further activities.

-Houry, now, when enough time has passed, how do you remember the Olympic Games?

-The Olympic Games were one of the most remarkable experiences. I will remember the Games for the rest of my life. I am truly honored to have earned a spot to compete at the highest level as well as represent our country. I will remember it was the best competition of my life and the perfect way to say good bye to the sport as an athlete.

-During the Games, you said you will stop your career after Rio. What are you planning to do now?

-I will continue working at my full time job as a physician assistant. I work in the surgery department helping to deliver babies in the operating room. As my second job, I coach gymnastics. On the side, I am advocating for women’s gymnastics in Armenia and hoping to encourage more growth and development of a women’s team. I am recruiting to find more Armenian-American’s to compete for Armenia like I did, as well as fundraising to help the gymnasts in Armenia with the expenses they have so they can get stronger and also compete.

-You were one of the most remembered persons of the 31st Games. What reactions did you receive?

-I received a lot of positive attention during and after the Games. I was doing something that I absolutely loved and I think that showed. I gained the “popularity” because of that emotional connection people felt with my love for the sport because that is what the Olympic Games is about. It isn’t about winning or losing. It is about coming together as a world and competing in the events that you have spent your whole life working to be excellent at. I am so happy that I could make my mark during the Olympics by competing well and inventing my skill The Gebeshian. Although, what is most important is that I could do it under the Armenian flag. It meant a lot to me, my family, and Armenian community that I could help Armenia get the recognition we deserve. We are a strong nation with a lot of talent and the world is just seeing the beginning of what we can do.

-What will you recommend to those gymnasts who are just starting their career and going for a big dream as you did?

-I recommend that those girls always dream big. You never know where you will end up if you follow your dreams. But I do know that you will not regret trying. No matter how big those dreams are, they are possible. If you put your mind to it, make a plan, and stick to it, anything is possible.

-When will we see you in Armenia?

-I am hoping to make a trip to Armenia at the end of this year (2017). I do not have any definitive plans, but I am hoping to make the trip happen.
