President Sargsyan showed tough stance on NK conflict during his Brussels visit – says MP
Bekaryan

YEREVAN, MARCH 3, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan demonstrated clear and tough stance on Nagorno Karabakh issue during all his meetings and interviews in Brussels, MP Karen Bekaryan – Chairman of the “European Integration” NGO, told reporters on March 3, reports “Armenpress”.

“This was done to make Armenia’s stance more perceivable and highlighted to the international community. President Serzh Sargsyan clearly presented all obstacles for the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict”, the MP said.

Bekaryan said during the President’s visit there was a reference to the April war and the preconditions that made the war possible.

“During that time the international community didn’t react harshly and didn’t assume the preventive role as a result currently the escalations continue in the line of contact. This means that if the international community doesn’t make a united reaction, there will not be a transition from the tense situation to a peaceful stage”, MP Bekaryan said.

He said the President also commented on the thesis constantly speculated by Azerbaijan which says the Armenian side tries only to cling to the status-quo.

“The President gave rather extensive and substantial response to this thesis by linking it with two main provisions. First of all, it is not natural to hold civilized talks and peaceful settlement process in the circumstances of the escalation of the situation and human losses and wounded in the borders. The President also emphasized that Azerbaijan’s escalation policy and current escalations hinder the so-called political negotiation process”, Bekaryan said, adding that if Azerbaijan wants to change the status-quo, the possible option of it is the recognition of the independence of Nagorno Karabakh.

President Serzh Sargsyan paid a working visit to Brussels on February 26-28. During the visit he had meetings with the leaders of EU structures - President of the European Council Donald Tusk, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini and others during which issues related to EU-Armenia relations, as well as the Karabakh conflict were discussed.
