Tombstones of Dizak meliks discovered during excavations in Artsakh’s Melik’s Palace

YEREVAN, APRIL 27, ARMENPRESS. Archeological expedition group members of the “State Service for Preservation of Historical Environment” SNCO of Artsakh’s Economy Ministry carry our cleaning and excavation works in the area of Melik’s Palace in Togh village of Artsakh, in the medieval tomb north from the St. Hovhannes Church.

Arman Grigoryan – Head of Tourism Department at Artsakh’s Ministry of Economy, said during the archeological works tombstones were discovered, including those of famous Dizak meliks. It was also revealed that they also include melik Yegan’s tombstone.

“Service for the preservation of historical-cultural reserve-museums and historical environment” SNCO of Armenia’s Culture Ministry told Armenpress that according to historical data, there must be 4 or 5 more Melik tombstones in Togh village.

The cleaning and excavation works of the northern yard of the Church are already over. More than two dozens of tombstones were opened, all of them mostly well maintained. Both the Church and the tombstones date back to the 18th century. The tombstones depict celebrations, hunting scenes and etc.

St. Hovhannes Church is located at the Togh’s Melik’s Palace historical-cultural reserve and is open for tourist visits.

It is expected to carry out excavations in the southern yard of the Church aimed at finding new tombstones.

Excavations in the village of Togh continue.
