Azerbaijan shuts down all opposition websites

YEREVAN, MAY 12, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijan has blocked several online opposition media outlets.

The Sabayil district court of Baku ruled in favor of the Azerbaijani transportation ministry’s lawsuit against several opposition online news websites on blocking them.

Azerbaijani media reported that the Court has blocked the websites of Radio Liberty’s Azerbaijani Service, Radio Liberty newspaper, Turan TV channel, Times of Azerbaijan TV program and Meydan TV.

Previously the Azerbaijani communication ministry had seized the abovementioned media outlets on March 27, 2017.

Azerbaijani authorities are silencing the voice of independent media in the country, which has minor vitality, in an attempt to deprive the population from truthful information.

In 2016, The Washington Post released an article entitled ‘Azerbaijan declares war against independent press’. The article said Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev is strictly angered by criticism.

Following this, Panama Papers revealed that the number of arrested journalists in Azerbaijan is extremely high.

Dozens of bloggers, reporters and activists are jailed in Azerbaijan. Meydan TV, which operates abroad, is not intimidated in releasing stories criticizing the Aliyev regime.

The Washington Post had advised Aliyev to apply to Meydan TV to learn democracy.
