Azerbaijan to risk its gas & oil system in event of launching all-out war – int’l security expert

YEREVAN, MAY 22, ARMENPRESS. In an event of Azerbaijan launching an all-out war, the Armenian side can target the country’s oil and gas system, international security & energy geopolitics expert and senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies’ international relations department Armen Manvelyan told a press conference.

“World history shows that decline of oil prices always coincides with military operations. It’s not ruled out for a similar option to happen for the region, however the issue is that if Azerbaijan were to launch large scale war, then it would appear under serious risks. Its entire gas and oil system would be targeted by the Armenian forces, which is natural”, Manvelyan said.

He noted that the Baku-Jeyhan oil pipeline and the Baku-Erzrum gas pipeline are normally controlled by British Petroleum, however it is the Azerbaijani authorities which are the guarantor of the stable activity of these pipelines.

“Therefore the Azerbaijani authorities are facing a dilemma. Launch a war or not? I believe Azerbaijan will limit itself with small scale actions”, he added.

According to expert on Azerbaijan Angela Elibegova, large scale war won’t happen because Azerbaijan doesn’t have the required resources anymore. The economic situation is such that it simply won’t handle an all-out war, but provocative actions will happen in the frontline.

“By creating tension in the frontline, the Azerbaijani authorities are attempting to divert the public’s attention from domestic social-economic problems. Analysis shows that when a serious economic situation arises in Azerbaijan, it affects the border situation. This scenario will be continued, because it works, since the Azerbaijani society is in an information vacuum. Their [Azerbaijani] media are reporting daily that they are living in a rapidly developing, wonderful country, and are showing images of Yerevan from the 90s and falsely saying that people here are dying from famine”, she said.
