MP says Armenian government engaged in ‘serious & consistent’ work against black market

YEREVAN, MAY 25, ARMENPRESS. Republican faction MP Gagik Minasyan, chairman of the Parliament’s standing committee of financial-credit and budgetary affairs, says there is serious and consistent work by the Armenian government in fighting shadow economy.

“The economy is reviving lately, the economic activity indicator is rising, and we have growth in almost all branches. We are doing a real job in terms of reducing the shadow [economy]”, Minasyan told a press conference on May 25.

The Member of Parliament also commented on the Prime Minister’s statements on attracting investments. He emphasized that there is a misconception as to investments are only financial, however, according to him, investments are the technologies which create jobs and manufacture products.

According to him, it is necessary to invite entrepreneurs who will invest and ensure jobs, rather inviting financiers, who will simply arrive, give money and leave.

Minasyan emphasized that some objective difficulties exist in Armenia in terms on attracting investments: the country is in a state of an undeclared war, has closed borders with its neighbors and the market is small. In his estimates, these factors can’t not have any impact on attraction of investments, however the expressed confidence that foreign investors will surely notice the ongoing reforms in the country.
