YEREVAN, MAY 20, ARMENPRESS. The new electoral system in Armenia will further contribute to strengthening democracy in the country, Hrayr Tovmasyan, candidate for the post of the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on State, Legal and Human Rights Affairs, said at the parliament session  in response to a question of ARF faction MP Armenuhi Kyureghyan, reports Armenpress.

Hrayr Tovmasyan disagreed with the ARF MP’s view according to which it is enshrined by the Constitution that the elections in Armenia will be held under a proportional system, however the Electoral Code set such a system which is not so different from majority election system.

“I don’t agree that our new electoral system is not different from the majority election system. In this hall there are MPs who received fewer votes, than the other candidates who didn’t enter the parliament. There is simply a problem of open and closed lists. Our system is a combination of open and closed lists”, MP Tovmasyan said.
