YEREVAN, OCTOBER 26, ARMENPRESS. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro accused on October 25 the country’s opposition of trying to carry out a "parliamentary coup" and vowed to prevent it, after the country’s parliament voted to begin impeachment proceedings against him, Sputnik News reports.

Earlier in the day, the opposition-dominated National assembly voted in favor of beginning impeachment proceedings.

"There has never been a parliamentary coup in Venezuela, and we shall not allow anything like this to happen, the right-wing here and there should know this," Maduro said, as quoted by the NTN24 television channel.

He called for a meeting of the country’s defense committee on Wednesday to discuss the events.
