Artsakh FM comments on results of Pashinyan-Putin-Aliyev meeting held in Sochi

STEPANAKERT, NOVEMBER 1, ARMENPRESS. Artsakh welcomes the trilateral meeting between the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan held in Sochi on October 31, but states that one should not expect a final settlement and peace from that meeting.

Foreign Minister of Artsakh Davit Babayan commented on the results of the Sochi meeting in an interview to Armenpress.

“First of all we need to understand that a comprehensive settlement is impossible during one meeting. It is not so because the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict is one of the most complex conflicts in the world, perhaps one of those like the Israeli-Arab one. The most important is that it was directly, indirectly fixed that the issue is not closed. It was fixed that there are issues which are not agreed upon and it is necessary to work. Reference was made to several agreements, particularly the statement of November 9, 2020. This is very important and is the most tangible achievement”, he said.

Babayan also said that the fact that the role of the Russian peacekeeping mission in Nagorno Karabakh was highlighted during the meeting is another positive result from the meeting. According to him, this shows once again that a respective entity exists.

“Therefore, we need to look at the results of the meeting from this point of view. Of course, any document or meeting could collapse, but they are very important. We need to understand that this is geopolitics. We have an important meeting, an event which has fixed that the process is ongoing, that nothing has been resolved and that it is necessary to continue the work on this direction. Moreover, it was stated once again that Russia is ready to play an active role in the region. This is the essence of the text of the statement adopted as a result of the meeting”, the Artsakh FM stated.

He also highlighted the importance of the Sochi summit from the perspective of latest developments where proposals were being made on making Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan. Contrary to this, Babayan said that the Sochi meeting stated that the issue is complex, is not solved yet, and works still need to be done.

“We need to understand that our desires do not always find a place especially in the emotional field. Therefore, we need to work, first of all we. We need to be persistent, rely firstly on our will, never be indifferent and think that everything is lost. If we show will, like we did during the rally in Stepanakert, and show that any status within Azerbaijan is unacceptable for us, then all that will finally be taken into account”, Davit Babayan said.
