“New Book” 2/46: King Lear, A Room of One's Own

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 28, ARMENPRESS.  "Armenpress" News Agency continues introducing the "New Book" project. The latter introduces information about the books published by Armenian publishing houses. Every Monday you can get information about the books published at the initiative of the Armenian publishing houses, read the description of the books, learn about the tendencies in the classic and contemporary literature. This week "Armenpress" has singled out two remarkable books, under two headings:

World Literature

Virginia Woolf, A Room of One's Own

A Room of One's Own is an extended essay by Virginia Woolf. First published on 24 October 1929, the essay was based on a series of lectures she delivered at Newnham College and Girton College, two women's colleges at Cambridge University in October 1928. While this extended essay in fact employs a fictional narrator and narrative to explore women both as writers of and characters in fiction, the manuscript for the delivery of the series of lectures, titled "Women and Fiction", which was published in Forum March 1929, and hence the essay, are considered non-fiction. The essay is generally seen as a feminist text, and is noted in its argument for both a literal and figural space for women writers within a literary tradition dominated by men.

The book was published by “Darak” publishing house, translated from English into Armenian by Manik Yeganyan, editor - Ashot Gabrielyan.

Classic Literature

William Shakespeare, King Lear

This publication of Shakespeare’s King Lear includes the new translation of the tragedy from the original language – English - into Armenian, with an extensive preface, references.   The book was published by “Zangak” publishing house. Editor – Gohar Muradyan, translator -  Aram Topchyan.

King Lear is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It depicts the gradual descent into madness of the title character, after he disposes of his kingdom giving bequests to two of his three daughters based on their flattery of him, bringing tragic consequences for all. Derived from the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king, the play has been widely adapted for the stage and motion pictures, with the title role coveted by many of the world's most accomplished actors.
