Armenian President receives delegation led by Bundestag Vice President

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 5, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan received on October 5 the delegation led by the Vice-President of the German Bundestag Johannes Singhammer.

At the beginning of the meeting President Sargsyan congratulated the guests on the national holiday of Germany, the day Unity, wishing friendly Germany peace and prosperity.

Serzh Sargsyan highlighted mutual high-level visits for the reinforcement of Armenian-German bilateral relations. The President recalled with pleasure his visit to Germany in April and the meetings with the top leadership of the country that passed in an atmosphere of mutual understanding. President Sagsyan hoped that the visit of the delegation led by Mr. Singhammer to the first Christian country will be productive and full of unforgettable memories.

Sharing the opinion that the Armenian-German relations are based on mutual trust and confidence, the interlocutors highlighted the development of inter-parliamentary development for the reinforcement of those relations. The President of Armenia documented with satisfaction that in the recent period the Bundestag parliamentarians visit Nagorno Karabakh as well to familiarize themselves with the NK conflict on site.

Serzh Sargsyan highly appreciated the German position on the Armenian Genocide, which was displayed by the adoption of a resolution recognizing and condemning the Genocide by the highest legislative body of the country.

A reference was made at Armenia-EU relations. President Sargsyan noted that Armenia attaches great value to its cooperation with Germany also in the context of its relations with the EU considering Germany’s key role in EU institutions and expressed gratitude for the support by Germany in the sidelines of the Eastern Partnership, as well as the financial and technical assistance rendered to Armenia for years.

Vice-President of the German Bundestag Johannes Singhammer thanked the President for the reception on behalf of the delegation, and stated that although Germany and Armenia have no common borders, but they share the same values. According to him, the people of Germany have a special spiritual connection with the first Christian country, and the resolution reflecting the historical justice is aimed at achieving peace, since the truth is a key precondition for peace.

The sides touched upon current international issues and threats to peace during the meeting.

Bundestag member Christian Haase handed to the President one of the 29 bronze doves molded in 2008  in line with UN Human Rights provisions. The dove is granted to the state officials who struggle for peace and particularly for religious freedoms.

“Armenpress” reports Pope Benedict the 16th, the Dalai Lama, Mikhail Gorbachev, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, head of the Bundestag CDU / CSU parliamentary group Volker Kauder have received such awards in the past.
