Justice ministry launches optimization in correctional facilities

YEREVAN, MAY 25, ARMENPRESS. The ministry of justice of Armenia plans to optimize the correctional facilities.

Deputy justice minister Suren Krmoyan told ARMENPRESS the program might get included in the government’s new action plan.

“The program will include proposals on new solutions, modernization and optimization of correctional facilities. For example, currently the Penal Code includes 4 types of correctional facilities – open, semi-open, semi-closed, and closed. We want to simply it and reduce it to 3. Our goal is to emphasize the open regime”, he said.

According to him, the number of inmates in correctional facilities will be significantly reduced with the introduction of probation system.

“Those individuals who will be granted to serve their sentence without being incarcerated, will serve their sentence in the community under the supervision of a probation officer”, Krmoyan said.

Krmoyan said there is almost no problem of overcrowding in prisons: after transferring a part of inmates to the Armavir facility the problem will be solved completely.
